Year 10 Work Experience- week commencing 16th October 2017

Year 10 were out of school on work experience. Work placements were organised by the school with our contacts in various professions including schools, pharmacies, dentists and opticians.

Work experience is important in giving pupils an awareness of the real world of work. It gives them an opportunity to develop job specific skill and enables pupils to develop confidence, motivation and commitment.

A recent survey showed two thirds of employers look for applicants with relevant work experience because it helps them prepare for work and develop general business awareness. Importantly, one third of employers felt that applicants did not have a satisfactory level of knowledge about their chosen career or job.

Feedback from placements was very positive; our students were described as “hardworking and using their own initiative”.

Aysha Patel undertook a placement at Vision Express Optician in the white Rose Centre in Leeds. She describes her experience as valuable. “I learnt many new skills and I found that I have an interest in optometry. I am interested in Science, and Optometry does link with Science a lot”. Aisha would highly recommend work experience as it enables one to gain many skills and experiences of real life.

On placement she was expected to greet customers, dispense spectacles, helping customers with frame selections. She was also involved in carrying out administrative duties which included organising paperwork, answering the phone and booking appointments for customers.

Dan Sawyer the Assistant Store Manager at Vision Express described Aisha as being ‘very polite and always happy to help… a valuable asset to any team. Aisha displayed the following strengths whilst on placement - using her own initiative and picking up different tasks quickly”. He said “she displayed an upbeat attitude, she was confident and positive at all times… we would be glad to have Aysha back as an employee”.

Khan enjoyed her placement at Purwell Lane Dental surgery, “I have found the experience rather enlightening as it has taught me how to behave and work in a professional workplace. It has also taught me how to deal withcustomers in a polite, friendly manner and has taught me to be efficient and confident “. Students found the placement useful, and describe their experience as a rewarding experience.

Her line manager had the following comments, “Sumayyah has shown very good communication skill and has shown she can take part and successfully complete the tasks which were set for her. She is a reliable, bright and polite student who is a great pleasure to work with. She is punctual and dedicated; we wish Sumayyah the best for her future.”
